Community Recorders Project
We will make a documentary movie and written documents to record the stories of
immigrant families in Sunset Park. This project not only provides you with the
opportunity to sharpen your skills but also the stage to present your achievements.
What you will learn and do:
- Planning, execution, and leadership skills. You may need to plan, discuss, advertise,
troubleshoot, and work with each other to successfully carry out projects.
- Photography, filming, and editing techniques. You will learn and have hands-on
experiences to reflect and tell a story visually.
- Writing and communication skills. You will learn to conduct interviews, express and
convey your messages effectively, and connect to your readers.
- Getting to know your community and its people, which helps foster your sense of
identity and belonging.
Details of the project:
The project lasts about 16 weeks from July 10 to October 23. You will need to
participate 2-3 days a week in July and August to finish most training and filming, and
one day a week in September and October to refine and edit the documents. Each
lesson lasts 1.5 hours, however, it may take a longer time to conduct and film the
We will offer online and in-person lessons with professionals of various fields and will
have weekly meetings to review the process and make plans. You will need to practice
and produce photographs, films, and writings each week.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for 12 high-school volunteers who are interested in and committed to
this project. You may need to fill out a form and have a simple interview to be selected.
