Seeing Happy: Summer 2025

Started in July, our teens embarked on a journey to celebrate the simple joys of life—the little things that are often overlooked in day-to-day routines. This was our second session of Seeing Happy, in partnership with SeeingHappy.org, founded by Mandy Seligman, whose vision and positivity inspire everyone to see that there is always the possibility for light and joy through photography.

This teen leadership program, led by Cal Hsiao—photographer, designer, and dedicated volunteer—along with Susan Liu, a social work intern, met in person every Friday and Saturday with 10 teens for six weeks. Together, they explored the Seeing Happy themes of noticing, creating, connecting, reframing, and storytelling. Their goal was to host an exhibition during one of PCR’s biggest events of the year—the Back to School event, which welcomed thousands of families.

After completing their lessons, the teens showcased their photographs, inviting the community to connect by seeing the world through each other’s eyes. More than 600 families attended, leaving post-its and comments on the photos that resonated with them. Children were often drawn to photos of food and pets, while parents tended to appreciate landscapes and nature. Through these shared moments, kids and parents were able to experience joy together—this is what makes the program so meaningful.

The work these teens accomplished truly matters. It encourages people to slow down, notice the beauty around them, and connect with one another in deeper ways. By sharing their vision, they are not only creating art—they are building community, spreading positivity, and inspiring others to see life with fresh eyes.

We are beyond grateful to the SeeingHappy.org team and to every teen who participated in this journey. We look forward to continuing to explore photography and positive psychology—discovering the world through the lens of joy.
